Dr Marietta Charakida

Dr Marietta Charakida is a consultant paediatrician with an interest in cardiovascular disease prevention. Between 2002-2005 she has worked as a research fellow in Vascular Physiology Department at the Institute of Child Health where she completed her PhD studies investigating the impact of infections in the vascular biology in the young.
She has contributed in the set up of vascular characterisation of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), established in 1991, which aims to study the genetic and environmental determinants of development and health from the prenatal period into adulthood.
She has been awarded for her research activities from the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health and from the European Congress of Cardiology. She has an interest on the cardiovascular complications of the HIV disease and has been collaborator on grant projects for the investigation of the impact of different antiretroviral regimes on the vasculature in African population.
She is actively participating in multicenter clinical trials investigating the vascular safety of cardiovascular medications. She coordinates the training of sonographers for non-invasive vascular techniques and is responsible for data analysis. She has published scientific work related to vascular biology in leading scientific journals including JAMA, Circulation, JACC and has contributed with chapters in cardiovascular books. She serves as a reviewer for a wide range of journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of Endocrinology, Paediatrics and Paediatric Infectious Diseases.
In June 2008 she was funded and completed an imaging fellowship (echo and cardiac MRI) in Paediatric Cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She is currently working as a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
